III Spanish Course for Tourist Guides and Journalists Specialized in Tourism from East Asian Countries Members of FEALAC

Background and justification

In the frame of FEALAC´s offers cultural exchange priority areas, the Government of Colombia organizes the III Spanish Course for Tourist Guides and Journalists Specialized in Tourism from FEALAC East Asia countries.

This project aims at increasing mutual understanding, trust, political dialogue, and friendly cooperation among FEALAC member states. Thus, culture and language are tools that will help our regions to achieve this important goal.

In this context, Colombia is offering up to 60 scholarships for tourist guides and journalists specialized in tourism interested in learning Spanish. The course will last 16 weeks and will take place in Colombia´s universities with recognized Spanish as a Second Language programs and experience with students coming from Asia.


Which are the entities that call?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its diplomatic and consular missions in East Asian countries, in alliance with the Colombian Presidential Agency for International Cooperation – APC Colombia–, the Colombian Institute for Educational Credit and Technical Studies Abroad –ICETEX–, the Instituto Caro y Cuervo, attached to the Ministry of Culture, and the Colombian universities that are part in this initiative.


Which is the candidate’s profile?

  • The candidate must:
  • Be a professional tourist guide, duly certified by the national regulatory agency for tourism in each country or a professional journalist specialized in tourism.
  • Must have basic knowledge of English.
  • Must be in good health.
  • Aged between 25 and 35 years old.
  • Note: If is not mandatory to have previous knowledge of Spanish.


Which documents are required?

General documents

1.  Application form provided by the diplomatic and consular mission duly filled.

2.  Recent photograph passport-size.

3.  Copy of the page of the passport where the personal data is displayed. The passport must have a validity of at least six months at the time of applying for a visa.

4.  Presentation letter from the Government agency that regulates the tourism or journalism sector certifying the candidacy and stating the candidate´s level of English.

5.  Commitment Letter duly signed.

6.  Health certificate.

7.  Spanish certificates issued by national or international institutions if any.

8.  Employment certificates if any.

9.  Visas if any.


Specific documents for journalists specialized in tourism:

1.  Professional degree issued by the University.

2.  Employment certificate stating that you are working in the area of tourism or at least five articles of your authorship related to tourism published in the last two years.


When and where will the course be held?

  • The course will last 16 weeks, equivalent to a Colombian academic semester and the dates will depend on the timetable established by each university for the second semester 2015.
  • The course will be held in Colombia at universities recommended by Instituto Caro y Cuervo.


What does the scholarship provide for citizens from Australia, Korea, New Zealand and Japan?

  • 100% of the tuition fee at a higher education institution in Colombia.
  • Courtesy visa issued by the Colombian Government though its diplomatic and consular mission in East Asian countries.


What does the scholarship provide for citizens from Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand or Vietnam?

  • 100% of the tuition fee at a higher education institution in Colombia.
  • Monthly stipend of USD 950. If the stay is not completed on the final month, the stipend will be paid proportionally to the permanency days in Colombia. This amount should cover the expenses for accommodation, board and local transportation.
  • Round-trip tickets from the capital of the FEALAC Member Country to the receiving city in Colombia (up to USD 5.000).
  • Health insurance with nationwide cover and repatriation in case of death.
  • Courtesy visa issued by the Colombian Government though its diplomatic and consular mission in East Asian countries.


How is the monthly stipend given? 

  • The selected candidates will receive a debit card that will be activated upon their arrival to Colombia, with the aid support of ICETEX. The activation could take one week. Therefore, the beneficiaries must have the resources to cover their living costs, of at least 250 USD.
  •  The accommodation of the first two nights in Bogotá will be deducted from the amount of the first month´s stipend.
  • The resources will be given monthly by the ICETEX.


The applications and other documents should be sent to the Colombian diplomatic or consular mission placed at the country of origin of the candidate.
